CV/ Biography

Xu Jiusheng is a professor of criminal law at the China University of Political Science and Law. He joined the faculty in 2006 and before that Xu was a researcher worked at the Ministry of Justice of the PRC. He has held visiting positions at Ruhr-University Bochum and University of Bern.

He received a B.A. in German from Guangzhou Foreign Language College and a LL.M. and J.D. from China University of Political Science and Law. He wrote his dissertation on the purpose of penalty, emphasizing it should be based on retribution while taking consideration into prevention.

Prof. Xu is a leading scholar whose work focuses on criminal law and criminology. He has written extensively in the field of Chinese and German criminal law, such as Explanation and Realization of the Purpose of Penalty (2011), On Preventive Detention (in German Sicherungsverwahrung) , (2006), Criminology Research on German-speaking Countries (1999) and won the Best Book Prize in 2000 and 2002 awarded by the Ministry of Justice. His work has been published in journals including Criminal Law Review, Issues on Juvenile Crimes and Delinquency, Journal of Southeast University (Philosophy and Social Science), Northern Legal Science,ect.

He also has translated massive works on criminal law into Chinese, such as German Criminal Code, German Criminal Law Textbook and articles written by Liszt, contributing to a better understanding and a deeper study on German criminal law.
